INTRODUCTION
For the average Nigerian Accounting Graduate, the next part to career advancement is the ICAN exam. This is particularly useful especially with the rate of unemployment in the country. They (the graduate) believe getting the ICAN qualification will enhance their employability. This is also TRUE because most job vacancies today require the qualification.
The road to getting this qualification is not an easy one I must tell you but following some secrets that I'll be sharing here is going to make the process less tedious and the qualification quicker to obtain.
Before I go on with the secrets, you must have at the back of your mind that the purpose of the exam is not just to land you your dream job but also to make you a thoroughly breed professional.
The ICAN PE1 exam is the first stage to write as an accounting graduate from an ICAN accredited institution and this stage comprises of four subjects, including Financial Accounting (FA), Management Accounting (MA), Advance Audit & Assurance (AAA) and lastly Information Technology (IT). I will take them one after the other.
FIRST SECRET - ATTEND LECTURES
The first secret after making up your mind to write the exam is ATTENDING LECTURES. Remember the terrain you're venturing into is a 'fresh' one. You need people who are familiar with the part to guide you. You might have graduated as the best student in your class or even with a first class degree, please attend lectures. The tutors most times have both theoretical and practical experience as professionals. Some of them are examiners with several years of experience and they know how and where to teach. I know a few people who didn't attend lectures and still passed. The truth is; they will not be as good as the ones that attended lectures (professionalism). Other advantages of attending lectures is that you have the opportunity of tapping from combined knowledge and also NETWORKING. You'll meet the future ICAN president in your class!
SECRET TWO - READING PLAN
Planning your personal reading timetable is the second secret. You should already know that attendance of lectures is not enough, you need to strategically plan your reading. The exams are held twice every year; May and November, so you've a minimum of four months to prepare for the next exam after the results are released. If you can consistently read and understand (you can always ask questions in class even if you don't understand) minimum of 2hrs everyday or 10hrs every week, you're sure to pass the exams. The plan is to alternate the subjects. The 'difficult' ones should be read early in the mornings or late at night (depending on your peak period). Break the months into weeks, weeks into days and days into hours. Make sure your four months is totally booked. Each day has its allotted hours.
SECRET THREE - MATERIALS
The first material is the ICAN pack. Forget about what you've heard about the packs, you need it. From experience, some examples from the packs have been lifted as exam questions. Moreso, each subject has a list of recommended textbooks. These textbooks are not for 'decoration'! They are to be bought (borrow/steal-to be returned later) and read. You can get this list inside the syllabus.
Another valuable material that you cannot do without is the ICAN PATHFINDERS. One of my tutors used to put it like this, "it's a sin not to see past questions before you write any exam". To commit this sin is to limit your chances of passing the exam. Go over the pathfinder again and again.
...to be continued.

DeletePlease I like to know what stage a person with Bsc. Accounting Education will start writing ICAN exams.
DeleteWhat is the total registration fee for this.
Please Sir, when is the ICAN Pack coming out, for the November 2014 Exams.
DeleteThx for the info, wish i had found ur blog sooner, pls am about to take the foundation stage, pls am be very grateful if i could get a very good material on FA and BUSINESS LAW. I actually downloaded an FA txt buk from the ican site but it doesnt help much, like its outdated or something, thanks again
ReplyDeleteThank you. For FFA in Foundation I'll recommend FAMS by Robert Igben. While for Law, get Omojola's Nigeria Law and also Company Law (2text by the same author).
ReplyDeleteYou can get this books in any good bookstore around.
Thanks Adebayo for the info. I just registered as a student, how can i apply for excemption, should i go ahead to bank to pay the money first or i register online first? i tried to check their website but it's not giving me the real information. it's only showing a platform to fill in atm details & i don't do online payment. pls help
ReplyDeletePlease go to the bank to pay the fee. They'll generate a pin number for you. That's what you'll need to complete the exemption process. Cheers!
DeleteThanks so much Ade, i'll do just that when my number comes out
ReplyDeletePlease I like to know what stage a person with Bsc. Accounting Education will start writing ICAN exams.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the total registration fee for this?
An individual with B.Ed will start from Intermediate. You can budget like 60k for registration, exemption and exams fees.
ReplyDeleteam having problem with AAA pls can you recommend passing strategy and test book for me
ReplyDeleteHi, AAA (and infact, all courses) has become very practical. You need to do a lot of case-study. Read the pack and ACCA pack as well and do a lot of CASE-STUDY. Round up with the Pathfinders for the last 10 diets.
DeleteI wish you the best.. cheers!
Oga Ade well done. MA is pulling me back in PE1 .I have passed every other subject. What can I do. Plsssssssss
ReplyDeleteHello @ Ibk, MA is one of the simplest course in PE1, all you need to know is the tactics to achieving success on first attempt. There is no easy way than to study. Forget about all the recommended books for now, you won't have the time to read them (barely 3 weeks to the exams). Look for ICAN Pathfinders for 20 diets, practice, practice, practice. More than 50% of what you'll see in the exam are from the Pathfinders (or closely related). you won't miss if you took your time and you put in more effort.
DeleteCheers!
May God give you success.
Whch stage cn some1 wit N.D in acccting starts from nd wat are d procedures to be followed?
ReplyDeleteHi, for someone with an ND certificate it depends on the course of study. for ND accounting, the person will start from ATS 3. Other courses have their different levels of exemptions.
DeleteFirst step is to register as a student. Go to any Zenith or Fidelity bank and purchase the PIN. I think it's about =N=7,450.00.
Cheers!
Thanks for tha write up. Its not easy at all o. I'll be writing PE1 in few days nd I'm so scared already. I don't even. Know what to read again. God should just save my soul
ReplyDeletehello, don't overwork yourself. Stay cool and calm. Play around with the past questions. Don't overwhelm yourself with the "BIG-BIG" books now (you don't have the time).
DeleteBelieve in yourself and believe in God.
Wishing you success.
Pls, for one that studied international law and diplomacy, where can the person start from and the procedure. Tanx
ReplyDeleteKindly visit ICAN website (www.ican-ngr.org) and download the syllabus from the download section. You'll find all the answers to your questions there.
DeleteThanks Steven. I appreciate your comment.

ReplyDeleteKindly visit ICAN website (www.ican-ngr.org) and download the study packs from the download section.
thank you.
Hi
ReplyDeleteAdebayo, thanks for the trend, its quiet informative. I have graduated
barely 9 years ago with an HND in Accounting, no work, no experience,
and no further studies. I wish to write ICAN. Can I proceed? where
should I start from? can I still get exemption?
Hello sir, HND Accounting has exemptions to PE1 level. Go ahead and do it.
Delete(9 years no work experience...are you serious? so what have you been doing this 9years? send a private message to: mouconsult@live.co.uk)
please I read education accounting, wia do I start
ReplyDeleteSame PE1 with normal accounting (HND/BSc)
DeletePlaese I have sat for PE1 twice but failled, all courses, and last Nov13 diet was so easy for,so i don't know where the problem lies
ReplyDelete@Taofik, first of all I want to commend your determination to succeed. I tell you; the skies will just be a stepping stone for your kind of spirit. Please don't relent, don't be discouraged. Make up your mind to write it again. Keep pressing forward. You'll get there in no time. I know how it must hurt...like I always tell people...feel bad and be fast at it!
DeleteI know a personal friend who has written PE1 two times and didn't pass any, his 3rd attempt was November 2013 and he passed 2papers. Now he's preparing for the remaining 2 in May.
Before you start reading again, you need to do a reassessment of yourself, your strategy and your plans.
What went wrong? What areas didn't you really understand? Can you really answer those "simple" questions again? Please be honest with yourself. Did you write legibly? Do you think you need to attend lectures? etc.
Look at the above and go through my articles on how to prepare from part 1-3.
I wish you success in your next attempt.
Good day sir, nice work you've got there. Pls how can i get the ican pack? Thanks in anticipation
ReplyDeleteHi Juwon, thank you.
DeletePlease visit the download section of ICAN website...www.ican-ngr.org
i must count my self among the few who happen to be lucky to come across this site.i happen to graduate last year from auchi poly last year and hopefully to leave for nysc by march. I was hoping i could sit for PE1 this year but the truth is i really don"t know what it would involve. Pls i would really appreciate if u could explain to me better from how one could register. I was made to understand that there are some courses which i have to be exempted frm and am to pay for it, am hoping u could tell me more about this and how much this exemption would cost me.One of the challenge i think i might face is the application of IFRS,the truth is i was already in final year when this was introduce to us and unfortunately i don't even have a copy of it,pls how do i get a soft copy?thanks
ReplyDeletePlease visit www.ican-ngr.org for information as to registration, exemptions and costs. As for IFRS materials, you can google.com or visit any top bookstore for latest books on IFRS. The better option is to google.com, this is because no one book cover all aspect of IFRS comprehensively.
Deletewhat books cn u recommend for me to pass AAA and MGT ACCING
ReplyDeleteHi, Your first material for any paper in ICAN exams is the ICAN pack. You'll also find inside the Packs a list of recommended textbooks.
Deletethe popular ones are by Adeniji ( for AAA & MA) ... still there's no one good book. Combine any 2 of the recommended text with the pack and your pathfinders.
That should do the MAGIC!
Peace!
Great write-up, job welldone Sir. The only challenge i have is the application of IFRS and i don't even have any textbook for this IFRS. Pls how do i get a soft copy of this? Am scared of writing the may diet, have reg since 2010, receive lectures 2010 but scared to write the exam but now i have to go for lectures. Whenever i wish to write the exam, i will look at the rate students do fail. But pls how do i get the soft copy of the IFRS. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHello, 2010 to 2014 is a long time. I'll recommend you go for lectures, a good one. This will help you boost your confidence level and also bring you up to date with current trends in IFRS and accounting treatments. Things have really changed, and for good!
DeleteAbout IFRS materials, just google.com and you're sure to get loads of PDF materials, different articles and publications here in Nigeria and all over the world.
Cheers!
Pls, the 2 hours per day... 10 hours a week is way too small even if U start reading 5 months to the exam. At least, 5 hours a day and 35 hours a week is reasonable. Abeg!
ReplyDeleteHello Chinyere, thanks for your comment. But the point I'm trying to stress here key is CONSISTENCY. There are days one could do more than two hours. Note that different people have different levels of assimilation. From personal experience and other peoples' experiences, minimum of 2 hrs daily is fine if one consistent.

ReplyDeleteI need the soft copy of IFRS and I would like to get a reading mate for those preparing for PE 1 and that live around ketu/Maryland....my number is 08035031441.

But my question is, am not ready for May diet now. Can i still enroll now 2 seat 6or the November diet? You can mail me: peculiarpearl26@gmail.com. Thanks in advance
ReplyDeleteHi MJPearl, you can register as a student and apply for your exemptions now while you wait till like August to apply for November exams.
DeleteYou can't apply to write November exam till around August.
thanks for the compliments.
If somebody fails the exam will the person register for up #60,000 again in order to write the exam for the second time
ReplyDeleteone gets to pay for only the courses failed. and PE1 is just about 40k while PE2 is about 45k. not 60k.

It's scaring o o o. l want to write too if at all have not register at all because of the failure rates...........
DeleteIn the midst of the joy and feeling of success of passing the ICAN exams for some people, some other people are hurt inside...trust me it's not a sweet experience.
ReplyDeleteNo one will understand the sleepless nights you had, the coffee and the "mixtures" you had to drink to keep awake, the social functions you'd to deliberately avoid, the monies you'd to sacrifice to pay for your exams/lectures, the candles you burnt, the Rechargeable lights you bought and the ones you'd to "knack" on the head to come on! I have been there!
Don't be afraid to cry...cry all you can, Take a long walk, take a bottle of cold "beer", find a way to express your sadness, but be fast at it! There is work to be done. The new syllabus is not going to be easier. Start your studies immediately.
I'd say congratulations as well, for attempting, you're better of for it.
I can go on and on, but I'll stop here for now.
